1. Tasers in canada!
I read this story about the whole taser issue involving Robert Dziekanski. The more I read and hear about it, the more disgusted I am with almost everyone involved. It sounds like the most aggressive thing Dziekanski did was to "brandish" a stapler- which may or may not have even happened; before he was tasered several times and died. I think I tend to give the RCMP the bennifit of the doubt most of the time- but there is no excuse for this. As well, they tasered him multiple times (four or fiveish, depending on who you ask)- so, why not stop after the first time? Anyways- it looks like the cops are going to get off more or less scott free. Also, I'm pretty torn about the use of tasers by cops. Clearly something needs to change- but this case is turning into TASERS ARE BAD!!, when really it should be about BAD COPS ARE BAD!! I don't think anyone can really say for certain that this would have not turned out horribly if tasers hadn't been used.
And back to this blog being about law, the braidwood inquiry into the conduct and misconduct of those involved in this mess is being made very public. The transcrips at http://braidwoodinquiry.ca are suprisingly readable and interesting.
